Porsche Panamera Turbo S Previewed Before New York

The most powerful iteration of the Porsche Panamera sedan yet will make its debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show next month. In preparation for the show, Porsche detailed the new sedan a little early. The Panamera Turbo S brings more power, more speed, and more standard equipment.

Porsche upgrades the Panamera Turbo's 4.8-liter twin-turbo V8 with new turbochargers with titanium-aluminum turbines and a reprogrammed engine control. The result is an extra 50 horses--up to 550-hp—and an extra 37 lb-ft of torque—up to 553 lb-ft. In Sport and Sport Plus modes that torque can be temporarily boosted up to 590 lb-ft.

On the road—or, more likely, track—those upgrades will result in a sprint to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds (vs. 4 seconds in the Panamera Turbo) and a 190 mph top speed (vs 188 mph). That's a whole lot of speed and quickness for the whole family to enjoy.

Though it gets 10 percent more power, Porsche doesn't expect a decline in efficiency. The company says that the Turbo S should remain close to the Panamera Turbo's 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway EPA ratings.

The Turbo S also gets upgraded with a number of performance packages. The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus can vary the amount of torque delivered to each wheel. The Sport Chrono Package Turbo can optimize engine and suspension settings. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control system is an active anti-roll feature. Other equipment includes sport exhaust system and speed-sensitive Servotronic steering.

On the outside, the Turbo S gets 20-inch Turbo II wheels, side skirts and adaptive, four-way rear spoiler. New exclusive color combinations of black/cream and agate grey/cream will be added for the dual-leather interior.

After making its debut on April 20, the Panamera Turbo S will go on sale later this spring. It will cost $173,200, excluding $975 destination and delivery fee.
