Porsche 918 Spyder Is On Sale For $845K

The world's most exhilarating hybrid is officially available. Porsche opened up its order books on the 918 Spyder on Monday, paving the way for up to 918 customers to own the world's hottest plug-in. The 918 Spyder brings a little sticker shock with its sexy exterior and green-but-potent numbers; Porsche has priced the model well above estimates and rumors at $845,000. But, since the 918 Spyder is essentially in a league of its own in terms of hybrid technology and performance, that would be Stuttgart's prerogative.

$845,000 will buy you the stunning combination of grunt, speed, and efficiency that Porsche debuted at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The 918's primary power comes from a modified version of the RS Spyder racing engine; a 500+ horsepower 4.0-liter V8 mounted amidships. The motor will be assisted by two electric motors that put out a combined 218-hp from the front and rear axles. A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that gets charged directly from a standard outlet (about 7 hours from a 110 V outlet) powers the two electric motors for more than 16 miles of all-electric range and 94 mph of speed.

You could probably tell from its 718-hp worth of powerplants and robust all-electric range, the 918 delivers in both the performance and green departments. It hits 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and brushes up against the 200-mph barrier with a 199 mph top speed. Meanwhile, it's rated at 78.4 mpg on the European consumption cycle and emits just 70 g/km of CO2.

While the 918 storyline has developed quickly, it will still be more than two years before production begins. Porsche will begin production at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen plant in mid-September 2013, with deliveries following in November of that year.

Those buyers who have a little bit of bank balance left after dropping the initial $845K—and let's face it, those who can afford a 918 should have plenty of balance left—will be given the option of a limited edition 911 Turbo S. The Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder Coupe and Cabriolet will be designed to resemble the 918 with similar exterior colors, carbon fiber elements inside and out, and acid-green accents around the cabin.

The special edition 911s will be produced in the same 918 quantity as the 918 itself, and will bear the same numbered badge as the customer's 918. Consider it a more versatile, everyday Porsche than the $845K 918. Also, it'll serve as a nice little placeholder, with deliveries scheduled for later this year—about two years earlier than the 918 itself. Pricing is the same as the standard 911 Turbo S: $160,700 for the Coupe and $172,100 for the Cabriolet.
