First Picture Of The De Tomaso SLC

One of the most interesting subplots of the Geneva Motor Show is the return of De Tomaso, a once highly-regarded sports car manufacturer that has been absent since 2004. In fact, had the new De Tomaso decided to come back with a revival of its hot, popular Pantera sports car, it might have been one of the biggest stories of the show. As it is, De Tomaso chose a four-door crossover for its comeback, so it'll have to take a back seat to flashier, more exciting Geneva cars like the Lamborghini Aventador and Pagani Huayra.

But we're still plenty excited to see De Tomaso back among the list of active Italian brands. And we're happy to get our eyes on the first photo of the SLC.

As a snowboarder, I'm used to reading SLC as "Salt Lake City," but in the case of the new De Tomaso it stands for sport luxury car. Yes, that's a terrible name, but De Tomaso plans to change it to something a little deeper for production, so it's but a placeholder.

The first picture of the SLC comes from an event in which De Tomaso presented the car to the Italian government. Unfortunately, the open doors block the full profile view (and don't provide much insight as to the interior), but its certainly a fuller look than we got from the teaser pictures that De Tomaso has been releasing to the media.

The Pininfarina-designed car is a compact but sporty sedan with a hatch in back. My first thought when I saw it was "Italian Acura TL". It should be an attractive alternative to competitors like the BMW 5-Series GT, though I suppose BMW has a bit more history in the luxury sedan segment.

The SLC will be powered by three engine options: a 542-hp V8, a 296-hp V6 and a 247-hp V6 diesel.

De Tomaso will fully reveal the car to the world at the Geneva Motor Show. The SLC is expected to be the first of three De Tomaso cars. The other cars will be a sedan and a coupe (hopefully bearing some connection to the Pantera).
