It's [Officially] Fast; Full McLaren MP4-12C Specs Released

It was nearly a year ago when McLaren introduced its first car since the timeless F1. But for the entire time that we've known about the MP4-12C, we've been left with mere estimates of its performance. Until this week. McLaren has made the numbers on the MP4-12C official, and they're quite impressive for a car that will eventually become the baby McLaren.

We knew that the MP4-12C had what it took: 592 horses and 443 lb-ft of torque worth of 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, and a lightweight build that includes a super-light, carbon fiber MonoCell chassis and generous use of composites throughout the body.

And the car makes good on the potential. It hits 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and 124 mph in 9.1 seconds. With optional Corsa tires, the MP4-12C hits both marks .2 seconds faster, bringing it close to a flat-3-second 0-to-62 mph (and maybe a sub-3-second 0-to-60 mph). The MP4-12C's top speed is listed at 205 mph—not anywhere near the 230-mph speed of the F1, but not bad for a $230,000 sports coupe.

McLaren was able to keep the weight of the MP4-12C down to a 2,868 lbs., pushing as much performance as possible out of its V8 engine. Drivers will harness the engine via a seven-speed dual-clutch SSG transmission with three driving modes: Normal, Sport, and Track. Drivers will be able to match the handling using three identically labeled suspension settings.

Earlier this month, McLaren began production on the MP4-12C at its McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. Deliveries will begin later this year, and the car will start at $229,000 in the U.S. ($231.4K after delivery fee). The car will be sold through McLaren's network of dealerships, which currently includes 35 locations in 19 countries.

Indications are that the MP4-12C will be the first in a series of cars from the reenergized McLaren, a series that will include a flagship hypercar in the vein of the F1. That car is rumored to be coming next year.
