World Car Nominees Announced

Looking past Geneva, the 2011 New York Auto Show will take place in April. At the show, the World Car of the Year honors will be awarded to the best green car, best performance car, and best overall car in the world. The field will get narrower in Geneva, but nominees for each category were announced this week, providing a look at which cars will be vying for the prestigious titles.

The Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf will once again be competing, this time for World Green Car of the Year. Chevy has been trouncing the Leaf here in the U.S., sweeping major awards like the Motor Trend Car of the Year, Green Journal Green Car of the Year, and North American Car of the Year. The Leaf, on the other hand, has a wider footprint and has had more success in Europe, winning awards like the European Car of the Year.

In addition to the Volt and Leaf, the BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell, and Smart Electric Drive are up for the award.

The well-praised Chevy Volt wasn't eligible for the overall category of World Car of the Year. However, the Leaf is in the running to take that award, along with the Audi A1, Audi A8, BMW 5-Series, BMW X3, Jaguar XJ, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes-Benz SLS, Porsche Cayenne, and Volvo S60/V60.

As for World Performance Car of the Year, the nominees are the Aston Martin Rapide, Audi RS 5 Coupe, Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, Ferrari 458 Italia (fires and all), Lamborghini Gallardo SUPERLEGGERA, Mercedes-Benz S63 / CL 63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Porsche 911 GT2RS, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Renault Megane III / Renault Sport.

The nominees for the World Car and World Performance Car were selected by a panel of 66 prominent auto journalists from Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and other parts of the world. The World Green Car nominees were selected by three green experts.

The 66 jurors will go on to evaluate the nominees and narrow the pool to three candidates in each category. Those finalists will be announced on March 1 at the Geneva Motor Show. Evaluation will be based on various criteria including overall merit, value, safety, environmental responsibility, emotional appeal, and significance. The winners will be selected at a NY Auto Show ceremony to be held on Thursday, April 21.

Last year's winners were the Volkswagen Polo (Car of the Year), Audi R8 V10 (Performance Car of the Year), and the Volkswagen BlueMotion (Green Car of the Year).
