Chevy To Debut Cruze Hatchback At Geneva

The Chevy Cruze has stood in the shadow of the Volt, but at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, it will get some spotlight of its own. Chevy announced that it will debut the production version of the Cruze hatchback at next month's show. The production model will look a lot like the concept version shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show last September.

For now, the Cruze hatch will launch as a global vehicle, and Chevy has not yet committed to bringing it here to North America. According to reports, the question of the car's availability here is still up in the air.

As a globally focused vehicle, the Cruze hatch will get a new range of engines that differ from what the standard Cruze uses. The only engine that Chevy has committed to so far is the 161-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel from the Chevy Orlando people mover. That engine will work with a six-speed manual gearbox. The car will have around 14 cubic feet of storage space in back and 60/40 split rear folding seats.

The Cruze hatchback is seen as integral to Chevy's success in the compact segment in the hatch-crazed European market.

The hatch will go on sale this summer in Europe. We'll have to wait until Geneva (or later) to get the full specification sheet and pricing on the Cruze hatch.

From what we can see, the Cruze hatchback is an attractive, efficient five-door, and we hope that Chevy decides to bring it here to the States.
