CARFAX and Experian Offer Vehicle History Apps

Every since the iPhone made its debut, companies, gamers, news outlets, and just about anyone with a new idea has gotten into the application business. Whether you need to look up recipes, find movie times, convert measurements, or get restaurant reviews delivered right to your phone, it seems there’s an app for everything. Now CARFAX Inc. and Experian Automotive have gotten into the app business by providing a way for car dealers to access their databases right from their cell phones.

When a potential car seller drives into a lot and wants to trade, a dealer can immediately access CARFAX and Experian from his computer (or iPhone) to get instant feedback on any potential trade. Before the internet, dealers had to rely on the  “kick the tire” method of checking out a car.

Both CARFAX’s CARFAX for Dealers and Experian’s AutoCheck Mobile for Business have been providing valuable information about a particular car’s history. This list can include reported accidents, tampering with the odometer, frame damage, salvage titles, or even flood damage. Armed with this data, a car dealer can proceed to put an offer together instantly for a pre-owned car. Backed up by the facts, it will be much more difficult for sellers to haggle.

With the new app features, a car dealer can enter in a car’s VIN or scan the VIN barcode. As quick as you can say “What’s this car worth?” dealers will have all the info.

“It makes complete sense: get the report early on,” says Joshua Steffan, Experian senior manager of product management.

Any AutoCheck client can download the AutoCheck Mobile for Business app onto their iPhones or Android cells for free. A Blackberry version of the app is still being developed.

At CARFAX, company spokesman Chris Basso reports that the CARFAX app is downloadable only for Apple devices, including the iPad and iTouch, along with the iPhone. Basically, all the “i’s” are covered. They are working up apps for Android, as well.
