Updated: Ford Teases 2012 Focus Electric

2011 will undoubtedly turn out to be a year of green cars and concepts. And one of the first electric vehicles of the year will be Ford's first EV: the Focus Electric. Ford released a teaser picture of the Focus EV today, giving us a slight glimpse at the car, which it will debut this week.

Demonstrating the changing landscape of the automotive industry, Ford plans to introduce the Focus Electric, not at the Detroit Auto Show next week, but at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

As is usually the case, Ford's teaser picture doesn't show much, but it does show a charging port encircled by blue LED lights—should prove useful if you ever have to charge in complete darkness. Other than that, we see the requisite electric badging and a powder-blue exterior paint job.

The electric-spec Focus is expected to deliver 100 miles worth of all-electric range, identical to the Nissan Leaf's company-sourced 100-mile range (the EPA certified the Leaf for a 73-mile range). Unlike the Chevy Volt, it will not have a range-extending engine and will therefore be positioned more towards short-distance commuters. The Focus uses lithium-polymer batteries developed by LG Chem. With the car, Ford aims to create a more affordable EV experience.

The initial launch will include 19 city markets around the U.S. including Chicago, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, and Washington D.C.

Ford has become a regular at the Consumer Electronics Show; last year it used the show to introduce its advanced information system known as MyFord Touch.

Dearborn plans to unveil the Focus Electric on Friday at 11 a.m. PST and will broadcast the event via the Livestream tab on its Facebook page. CEO Alan Mulally will preside over the event.
