New BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Spotted

Is BMW going full-blown crazy and building the Vision EfficientDynamics with conceptual elements like the clear, teardrop doors present and intact? A new version of the VED spotted in the Middle East seems to suggest that it is. But since the car isn't due out until 2013, it's likely that this latest spied model is just a refined prototype, and that BMW still has some toning down to do before the final production version. Whatever the case, it's a nice, new look at the VED/i8/i100 that we're glad to have.

The photos originated from Teamspeed forum poster "Captain Stradale" who says he spotted the VED doing testing at a track in Abu Dhabi. The new version of the VED replaces the white paint of the original with a silver and doesn't skip a beat aesthetically. We're hard-pressed to decide if we like the white or silver better, but both are sexy as hell. The blue accents seen on the original Frankfurt '09 concept remain.

In November, BMW confirmed that it would be producing a car based upon the Vision EfficientDynamics. Recent rumors indicate that BMW is considering changing the name of the car to the i8 when it makes production.

Whatever it's called, the car will get an exciting hybrid powertrain designed to deliver sporty performance with solid fuel economy. BMW has not indicated what will power the production model, but the concept featured a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel with two electric motors, combining for 328 horses. That car hit 62 mph in 4.8 seconds while boasting 63 mpg of economy. The concept was capable of 31 miles of all-electric driving before the engine kicked in for an additional 400 miles or so.

BMW is expected to launch the production VED in 2013, and we're betting they'll return to Frankfurt, where they introduced the car. When it hits the market in 2014, the car is expected to retail for around $235,000.
