Fisker Partners With Distribution Company For China Presence

China may not be the first place that you think of when it comes to clean air and green vehicles, but it will be one of the first global markets to have access to the American-developed Fisker Karma. According to news reports, Fisker has reached a deal with China Grand Automotive Group (CGA) toward selling, marketing and servicing its plug-in hybrid Karma sedans throughout China.

Fisker is aiming to simultaneously capitalize on China's recent upswing in the luxury vehicle market and tightening emissions regulations, two factors that it thinks will make its 300-mile Karma sedan quite attractive to buyers. According to the California-based company, CGA has a nationwide network of more than 200 dealers, selling 40 different brands of cars, including high-end cars like BMWs, Lamborghinis and Lexuses.

The Chinese distribution agreement is part of Fisker's plan to sell 15,000 Karmas per year around various global markets.

After several years of production delays, Fisker appears poised to begin selling the Karma next year. The company brought the final production version of the hybrid sedan to the Paris Motor Show in the fall, as well as the LA Auto Show last month, and plans to debut the Chinese-spec production model at the Shanghai Auto Show in April. It will get the first China-market Karma out to customers by fall of next year.

The Karma is a high-end sedan that is motivated by a 400-hp combination of two rear-mounted electric motors powered by a 20 kWh lithium ion battery pack and a 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder. It offers all-electric driving capabilities with a range of about 50 miles. After the batteries run dry, the gas engine kicks in and extends the car's range to about 300 miles. Fuel economy is a Fisker-sourced 67 mpg combined.

The Karma's green powertrain is complemented by such equipment as roof-mounted solar panels and sustainable wood interiors. The Karma is expected to launch in the United States in early 2011 with a retail price of $87,400.
