Sneak Peek of January's Detroit Auto Show

Whenever a new movie premieres, Hollywood pulls out all the stops to let the world know all about it. There is the traditional red carpet line where the stars and filmmakers greet the press and fans. It doesn’t matter if the movie turns out to be a hit or not, this first introduction tells everyone there is something special going on and attention must be paid.

That same situation happens every year in Detroit as the major automakers roll out their new auto lines. Anticipation builds to a peak in the weeks leading up to the North American International Auto Show. Although there might not be any tires imprinted in cement, such as Hollywood stars’ footprints, but there will be plenty of future stars with innovative new styles and technology on hand to inspect.

Last, year there were 37 concept and production styles introduced in Detroit. Among that group was the worldwide premiere of 27 new cars. That was one amazing showroom and this year promises to be just as big. Show organizers said today that they are preparing for the debut of between 30 to 40 vehicles presented by automakers from all corners of the world. This is truly an international event as designers, consumers, and the press will get their first peek at what will be rolling off the assembly lines in the upcoming year.

Among the headline grabbers will surely be the concept cars of the Audi A6, the Chrysler 300, the Ford Escape, and the Honda Civic. The new line of Toyota Prius MPV will also be on display for anyone who wants to kick the proverbial tires of a new hybrid.

Porsche AG, after sitting out of the last couple of years, is rolling back into Detroit in a big way with the expected debut of a brand new supercar concept. The words “supercar” and “Porsche” have a lot of people buzzing. If debuts from years past are any indication, they won’t be disappointed by the 2011 Porsche display.

Also scheduled to take center stage will be models from GEM, Wiki Speed, Saba Motors, Venturi, and ZF Industries. On the electric car front, BYD Corp will be the lone Chinese automaker to have signed up for the show, which will give them plenty of room to capture the spotlight. BYD recently announced that they intend to begin road tests of their electric automobile line in the US sometime next year. That means the pressure will be on to deliver the goods during the auto show.

“We are seeing evidence the industry is on an upswing,” said Barron Meade, chairman of the show. “There is even more steel going up this year.”

The automotive press will get a preview look at the cars starting on January 10th. The general public will have to wait until the 15th to get their first glimpse of the new autos. The Detroit International Auto Show runs through January 23rd, so stay tuned to the Auto Shopper for exciting news to come.
