Toyota Will Recall 94,000 Siennas for Defective Switch Brackets

Toyota Motor Corp. added yet another recall to its growing list. The automaker is voluntarily recalling about 94,000 Toyota Sienna minivans produced before early November. The Siennas were recalled for defective stop lamp switch brackets, placed near the parking brake, that are necessary to engage the brake lights.

According to a recent Automotive News article: “the bracket is near enough to the parking brake pedal that, when the parking brake is fully applied, the stop lamp switch bracket could be deformed by the driver's foot.” This could result in the brake lights remaining lit or even partial engagement of the brakes, which could cause a reduction of brake effectiveness over time.

In instances where the bracket is majorly malformed, it could cause the brakes to remain moderately engaged. The result would be brake vibration, and brake noise as a direct result of brake drag. The brake warning light would then be triggered and, if the problem persists, it could possibly result in the inability of brakes to effectively stop the vehicle.

Toyota reported: “that Sienna owners will receive an interim notification advising them of this recall by first class mail beginning in mid-January 2011, along with instructions for what to do if they experience this condition and how to minimize the possibility of inadvertently contacting the stop lamp switch bracket while operating the parking brake. Toyota will also post this information on its website.”

Sienna owners with affected models can expect another notification in mid-February, when they will be invited to make an appointment at any Toyota dealer in the country in order to remedy the problem at no charge.

The Sienna is the only Toyota model that is involved in the recall and Toyota states that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries resulting from the faulty switch brackets in recalled Sienna minivans.
