Honda Previews Next-Gen Civic With Detroit Concept

Honda is hard at work developing the next generation Civic, a model that will debut for the 2012 model year. It plans to preview the model in concept form at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (Detroit) next month, and released a single teaser rendering of the concept this week, providing a sneak preview of what the next Civic will look like.

Most Americans may be pretty focused on Christmas and New Year's at this time of year, but auto industry execs are looking a little further down the calendar at the fast-approaching Detroit show. One of the biggest shows in the United States, Detroit also serves as the first show of the year, an important venue for setting the tone of the year to come.

Honda's rendering shows mostly front-end with a little profile squeezed in. The Detroit concept has a new front fascia, which includes redesigned headlights and grille. It also gets a tangibly curvier look than the outgoing Honda Civic, borrowing markedly from the CR-Z, with its curvaceous form, swooping roofline and narrow, semi-triangular headlights.

From this rendering, it seems Honda will be going for a more agressive, sporty look for the Civic coupe. From spy video we've seen of the upcoming Civic Sedan, Honda will be playing it more safely with the larger version, maintaining a utilitarian look closely related to the current Civic Sedan.

While it will be but a concept in Detroit, Honda doesn't plan on taking much time to deliver the production model. The 2012 Civic will go on sale in the spring of next year, just a few quick months after Detroit. So while the production Civic will likely be a little tamer than this concept, it shouldn't differ too drastically given the close time frame with which Honda is working.

It's not yet known what the ninth-generation Civic will pack under the hood, but it's rumored that Honda will launch new gas and diesel engine options for its latest compact.
