Muscle On The Cheap

Not since 1974 have the three American pony cars shared the road together. Go to your closet and dust off your jeans jacket, because these re-tooled classics – The Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Mustang are three modern classics that will go fast, look good, and can be parked in your barn for around $20,000.

The newest of the trio, The Camaro has great looks inside and out, plus sports an independent suspension. With direct injection and 304 horses, the V6 has as much power as other V8s, but with fuel, consumption comparable to a midsize. Step up from the base model and the “SS” has the same engine as the ’10 Corvette.

The Dodge Challenger clearly draws its inspiration from vintage models and has to be a consideration for the most discernable Mopar maniac. Numerous V8 options to choose from and a spacious cabin make the Challenger an easy fit in anyone’s stable. I am disappointed in the colors that Dodge has made available for this classic rebirth — No Plum Crazy Purple? Overall, this is one badass boulevard cruiser.

The ’10 Ford Mustang has been revised inside and out without dishonoring the car's roots. If you are trying to buy a muscle car on the cheap, this car looks to have the lowest base price. The V6 has the lowest horsepower of all three cars. The 210 HP sounds dismal compared to the Camaro.

If you want cheap but extremely common everyday ride, buy the Mustang!
If you want fastest, most engaging performer with questionable looks, buy the Camaro!
If you want great performance that looks good and gets you there in comfort and style, then the Challenger is your car!

Thank you to Ford for starting this whole retro muscle car war again.
