BMW 1Series M Coupe Will Be Launched In North America, Expect Limited Supply

Just when you thought BMW couldn’t get any more performance out of its automobiles, brace yourself for the new BMW 1M Coupe. It’s the most powerful and intense 1-series BMW yet, and it’s not going to be around for long. After its debut at next year's Detroit Auto Show, BMW is going to make a limited supply of the M coupe available in North America. After that, this BMW will join the ranks of the exclusive BMW cars that have become a collector’s dream.

What will be under the hood of this new model? A twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that’s going to kick out an impressive 335 hp at 5,900 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm. How will that translate into power on the road? Try zero to sixty in just under 4.7 seconds to a fast and furious top speed of 155 mph.

AutoWeek had the privilege of a first peek at this hot model from BMW and reports that the same engine used in the Z4 sDrive35is has been adapted for this coupe. Meaning the 1M will be sharing the same level of design and engineering expertise of the Z4 35is power house, but with some interesting upgrades. There’s a second-generation, direct-injection system that is combined with a dual-mass flywheel to create dizzying throttle response.

The need for speed is facilitated by the lightweight aluminum used in the manufacture of the MacPherson-strut front end suspension. The track here has been beefed up by 2.8 for an astounding 60.7 inches. Add to that two extra longitudinal struts for the rear multilink and you can see why this is truly the next generation of BMW.

The BMW designers also improved the front bumper with a larger center air intake and air curtains. This is going to even out the airflow to help decrease the aerodynamic drag even more. Translation: one smooth, road-gripping ride.

Move inside the new BMW M coupe and you’ll slip into lush sport seats up front, a thick-grip, three-spoke M division steering wheel and a brand new reworked instrument panel. For those who are interested in owning a 1-Series M Coupe vehicle, you will need to act quickly to reserve a test drive at your closest BMW dealership. These Coupes aren’t going to be sitting in the showroom for long.
