Bentley And Porsche To Work Together/Share Platforms

It looks like all is harmonious in the Volkswagen family. Last month, reports indicated that Audi and Bentley are sharing a V8 powertrain that will appear in the Continental GT and future Audi models. New reports indicate that VW's newest member, Porsche, is also planning on sharing a little know-how and hardware with its British cousin. The two companies are likely to share platforms and strategy.

Autocar reports that Porsche chief Matthias Müller indicated that the two companies will look to share platforms and knowledge.

The British publication quoted him as stating: “I think we have to discuss with Bentley whether we can put together our performance, our engineers. It should be possible. What we want to do, in conjunction with Bentley, is to have a common architecture, a common performance in purchasing, and so on. That is just an offer to Bentley; you have to understand. Everybody will be keen to get synergies and reduce costs, and at the end of the day, have a better revenue.”

Müller went on to state that Porsche will look closely at Bentley when deciding if and how to proceed with Porsche Panamera derivatives. A Panamera-based two-door that would serve as spiritual successor to the Porsche 928 is one possibility that could be affected by Porsche's VW tie-in to Bentley. Müller admitted that he will need to consider the Continental GT when developing a Panamera two-door.

In addition to a big two-door, Müller cited a longer Panamera, a combi and a van as possible Panamera family members (possible family members that it's very difficult to get too excited about). In addition to analyzing internal competition, Porsche will need to assess how these models will go over with its customer base.

Bentley's 2011 Continental GT two-door sports a 567-hp W12 engine and bears a retail price of just under $190K. That leaves plenty of market for a smaller Porsche Panamera two-door, but the Continental GT will also come in a V8 variant, using the 4.0-liter V8 that Bentley is working on with Audi. Pricing hasn't been announced for that model, but it will obviously be less expensive than the W12 version.

The Porsche Panamera, meanwhile, comes in several flavors, including the 400-hp, V8-powered Panamera S and the 500-hp V8 Panamera Turbo, the latter of which retails for around $133,000 (2010 model).
