Will Volkswagen Bring Back the Legendary Microbus?

The Volkswagen Transporter Type 2--also commonly called the minibus or microbus-- is a remnant of a bygone era, an era when free love, anti-war and timeless music were all the rage. In fact, it's hard to think of the classic VW and not think of long-haired hippies, psychadelic drugs, tie dye and Woodstock.

According to reports, the VW Microbus will soon be part of a new era. Volkswagen Chief Designer Klaus Bischoff has confirmed that VW is working on a new version of its classic minibus. The news is far short of a full production confirmation, but it makes clear that VW is at least giving some careful thought to bringing back the legend.

Bischoff is quoted in media reports as stating: "I would not be doing my job at Volkswagen properly if I was not thinking of bringing back the Camper."

While its clear that VW designers are looking at possiblities for a future bus, it's not clear exactly what that vehicle will look like. Design is currently up in the air, and VW is looking at a number of possible directions to take.
Bischoff explained: "The key question is 'what sort of car should we build.' It could be a traditional MPV with a conventional interior, or we could be much bolder, designing a more flexible, versatile machine -- perhaps one that is closer in spirit to the original model. It is not yet decided."
Given the peace, love and nature following of the original microbus, it seems like a hybrid or electric powertrain would be a smart way to go. That could help VW to stay true to the spirit of the original while introducing a modern, tech-infused van that would be quite relevant in today's market.
While Volkswagen continues to build vehicles under the Transporter family, none of their more modern models have the flair of the classic minibus. In 2001, the company gave a nod to the classic with the Microbus Concept, a concept that it launched at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. That concept took the general look and shape of the original minibus and added some modern styling cues.
The next-gen bus is being designed by a global team that includes designers in Europe and in California. It's currently in the early stages and isn't expected--even in concept form--until sometime around 2012.
