Step Aside Jota: Lamborghini Aventador To Be The Next Flagship

Well,cf file this under big, swooping curve ball: after months of seeing spy shots and rumors of the upcoming Lamborghini Jota, the car that will replace the Murcielago at the top of Lamborghini's line, a new spate of rumors indicates we may never see the Jota at all. What we've come to know as Jota may go by the name Aventador.

Rumors relate to a few separate moves by Lamborghini. According to sources like Trademarkia.com, Lamborghini trademarked the name "Aventador" with the U.S. Patents and Trademarks Office back in the summer. That would indicate that Lamborghini plans to use the name, but not necessarily for its next car. And since that car has been called the Jota for months, it would seem that the name might be for another future Lambo.

But according to another set of rumors, Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini's CEO, confirmed at a no-cameras, behind closed doors event that the Aventador name was for the upcoming flagship. A poster on Ferrarichat.com stated that the full name will be Aventador LP700-4, the same numerical designation that has been previously rumored.

European auto blog Autogespot also reported that Lamborghini confirmed the Aventador name.

Other rumors about what the new Lamborghini will bring indicate a 217 mph top speed, 2.9-second to 62 mph and 500 lbs. less weight than the Murcielago thanks to carbon fiber construction. If you don't know Lambos, the 700 in the full name indicates 700 horses of V12 output. It reportedly draws a lot of influence from the Reventon.

As is Lamborghini's custom, its name can relate to a bull. According to Auto Blog, the Aventador was a 1,000-lb. bull that fought in thePlaza de Toros de Zaragoza, though Aventador has a variety of other definitions.

Whether it's the Aventador or Jota, it's expected at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next March. Personally I prefer the short, simple "Jota" over the longer, robotic-sounding Aventador, so I'm kind of hoping that this new rumor is wrong. Maybe it's the fact that Jota sounds a little like one of my favorite Lamborghini underdogs of years past—the Jalpa—but I just think that the more succinct, simple term sounds better for a flagship Lambo.

What about you? Would you prefer to see the next Lamborghini flagship named the Aventador, Jota or something differently entirely. Or do you not care, since you won't be buying one anyway?
