Nissan Recalls Over 600,000 Vehicles Because of Steering And Battery Issues

Nissan Motor is recalling over 600,000 pickup trucks and cars globally because of concerns regarding steering shafts and battery terminals. Approximately 300,000 Frontier pickup trucks, 18,500 Sentras, and over 280,000 Xterra SUVs are included in the recall. Most of the vehicles (about 85%) are in the United States and are between 2001 to 2010 model years.

Nissan reports problems in the steering column which results in corrosion that may limit the flexibility of the lower joint and cause cracking of the steering shaft. The second defect is in the Sentra’s battery terminal which could lead to difficulty in starting the vehicle, or possibly result in stalling at slow speeds.

The Japanese automaker received three reports of the problem in Canada and six in Brazil.

In late October, Nissan recalled over 2 million cars, including the popular March subcompact, assembled in Thailand, which brings the total number of vehicles recalled by Nissan weeks to 2.6 million in the past four weeks. After the recall was announced, Nissan shares fell over 2% in Tokyo, outpacing broader weakness in the Tokyo stock markets. According to Nissan, no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the defects.

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
NISSAN / SENTRA 2010-2011

Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC. Mfr's Report Date: NOV 11, 2010

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V555000

NHTSA Action Number: N/A

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLES
Potential Number of Units Affected: 13737

Summary:
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 SENTRA VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 22, 2010, THROUGH JULY 8, 2010. DUE TO A MACHINING IRREGULARITY, THE BOLT/WASHER SURFACE ON THE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CABLE END MAY ALLOW FOR A GAP TO OCCUR IN THE CONTACT AREA OF THE TERMINAL. THIS CAN RESULT IN A VOLTAGE DROP THAT MAY CAUSE DIFFICULTY STARTING THE VEHICLE AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE.

Consequence:
THIS ISSUE CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AT LOW SPEED WITH A DIFFICULT OR NO START INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CABLE END WITH A NEW ONE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 29, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Notes:
OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):
NISSAN / FRONTIER 2002-2004
NISSAN / XTERRA 2002-2004

Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC. Mfr's Report Date: NOV 12, 2010

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V554000

NHTSA Action Number: N/A

Component: STEERING:COLUMN
Potential Number of Units Affected: 500552

Summary:
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002-2004 FRONTIER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 9, 2001 THROUGH OCTOBER 20, 2004, AND MODEL YEAR 2002-2004, XTERRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 9, 2001, THROUGH JANUARY 6, 2005. OVER TIME CORROSION MAY FORM IN THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN JOINT AND LIMIT MOVEMENT OF THE JOINT. THE LIMITED MOVEMENT OF THIS JOINT MAY CREATE EXCESSIVE LOAD ON THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT. IF THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE DRIVEN IN THIS CONDITION, IT MAY LEAD TO CRACKING OF THE SHAFT DURING LOW SPEED MANEUVERS THAT REQUIRE LARGE STEERING INPUTS.

Consequence:
THE SHAFT MAY BREAK WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL DURING THESE LOW SPEED MANEUVERS INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT AND JOINT WILL BE REPLACED WITH A SHAFT OF A DIFFERENT DESIGN. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING DECEMBER 2010.
