The New MAZDA5; Is It a Minvan, Crossover, or SUV?

Although Mazda is calling the 2012 MAZDA5 a Crossover/SUV, many critics are calling it a minivan. Whatever you call the vehicle, it is equipped with all of the features of a minivan; features such as sliding doors for convenient loading of cargo and passengers, and the roominess of a third-row seat configuration, with three person bench seat. The 7-passenger vehicle will debut at this years’ Los Angeles Auto Show.

The smaller, sportier 2012 MAZDA5 is said to be a unique alternative to the Toyota Matrix and Scion xB.

Exact specs have not yet been released for the U.S. version of the MAZDA5. The following features and options are speculative, based on the European version of the 2012 model.

The styling of the new MAZDA5 is being described by the Japanese automaker using the term “nagara,” English translation being "flow". The flanks are set off by elegant swooping lines and the rear sports wrap-around glass and horizontal lamps.

The refreshed MAZDA5 was designed, according to Mazda, with comfort in mind as evidence by the roomier seats and power doors. The power sliding doors in the rear provide easier access for rear passengers and may be available in the U.S. model. Other improvements include stiffer body structure and suspension upgrades as well as new technology to improve handling.

There will be a new engine, though the details have not been confirmed. There is speculation that a 4 cylinder, 2.5 liter engine that produces 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque will be offered. Transmission options may include a six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic.

According to America Jr.com the MAZDA5 is; “in-a-class-of-its-own,” America Jr.com also stated that MAZDA; “redefined the definition of small family transport vehicles."

MAZDA incorporates design from its NAGARE inspiration, incorporating the beauty of nature, which according to America Jr. com, “presents an elegant look not found in any existing vehicle today that captures the eye upon first glance.”

Although the exact fuel economy rating has not yet been disclosed, outstanding fuel economy is said to be “carried over from last years’ model.”

The MAZDA5 will be featured in the world's media press conference on Wednesday, November 17th, so stay tuned to the AutoShopperBlog for new developments.
