Volkswagen Working On BlueSport Convertible For 2013 Debut

Like the Porsche Boxster, but don't quite have the money to justify a $50,000 roadster? Porsche's daddy Volkswagen is working on just what you crave. The BlueSport roadster was originally launched as a concept in 2009, and word is that the German automaker plans to debut the production version in 2013. Development is underway.

Debuted at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, the BlueSport bore some definite resemblance to the Boxster, but lost the overdone Porsche headlights in favor of a more angular pair similar to those seen on the Jetta, only sharper and more narrow. Smaller than the Boxster, the BlueSport measured in at 13 feet (the Boxster is over 14) with a 96-inch wheelbase.

The BlueSport concept was positioned as a performance-based diesel and featured a mid-mounted 180-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel paired to a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It was configured for rear-wheel driving. That combo was said to deliver a 6.2-second 0-to-60 mph time and a top speed of 140 mph while pumping out 35 miles to the gallon on the European cycle.

The production version will lose the performance diesel slant in favor of a petrol engine, a 220-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter FSI engine. That engine will be fitted to six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG options.

The BlueSport will sit on VW's new MMB platform, which will also serve as the basis for two other German roadsters: a smaller, cheaper Boxster and an Audi R4 roadster. The MMB platform can accept different track widths, and VW is planning to take advantage of that fact to help distinguish the three roadsters from each other. Outside, the BlueSport is expected to bear much resemblance to the 2009 concept. It will have the same fabric roof and two-seat configuration.

Volkswagen is developing the car with an intended launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show of 2013.
