Chevrolet Camaro Z28 News

GM is such a tease. They're always telling me what I want to hear, and I always eat it up even though I know 'what I want to hear' is usually too good to be true. GM dangles tasty morsels of automotive erotica in front of my face and then sweeps the cars I lust after back under the rug at the first sign of political or economic turmoil. The examples are endless: Pontiac G8/Chevy Caprice/G8 ST/Buick Grand National, The CTS-V Wagon/Coupe, and the Camaro Z28 all spring to mind.
Not much can be said for the poor G8 and its possible offspring, and the CTS-V Wagon is very much in doubt, but the Camaro goodness is still in the pipeline. Following is news on the Z28 and a few people who couldn't wait until GM got around to making it . ..

Z28: Ed Welburn, GM's vice president for global design, has openly admitted that the Camaro Z28, axed after it's debut in that suck-fest Transformers Two, is in fact scheduled for production once again. According to Welburn, the Z28's body modifications and styling are finished, but there is plenty of chassis calibration and drivetrain work yet to be done. Expect the Z28 to take about a year to make it into production.

The nastiest Camaro will feature the same LSA V8 used in the Cadillac CTS-V, utilizing the ZR1's supercharger but not its titanium-laden cylinder heads or dry-sump lubrication system. This engine grunts out 556 bhp in the Cadillac; no reason to think it would be detuned for the Camaro. Offered with a conventional 6-speed manual or the now ubiquitous flappy-paddle nonsense, the Camaro Z28 should be priced under forty large, much past fifty and the Z28 will stomping all over the base Corvette's less powerful toes . ..

A year?! Seriously? If you just can't wait that long for an 500+ bhp Camaro there are several well-known companies that are more than willing to stuff gut-wrenching push rod awesomeness into your pedestrian Camaro.

Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) offers several ridiculous kits for the Camaro, the HPE550 Camaro being the closest to an actual Z28. This car can be ordered directly from HPE or at any Chevy dealership, and only 500 will be made for 2009.

You may want to turn your speakers way down before starting this video . ..

Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) has been turning Corvettes into baby-eaters for nearly thirty years. They have applied their substantial small-block knowledge to the Camaro, offering several kits ranging from Supercharged LS3's to dropping in the mighty LS7 V8 from the Z06.

Then we have those intrepid souls who wait for no man, preforming their ridonkulous engine swaps themselves. Conrad Grunewald is one such soul. Needing to replace his aging C5 Corvette (Conrad competes in the Formula D, North Americas premiere drifting series,) Conrad decided to buy him a new 'Marrow SS, so he could go to town on it with a plasma cutter and some Bondo. Besides upgrading the chassis and body work, Conrad is also inserting an LSA V8 into the Camaro's engine compartment, in effect creating the worlds first 'Z28'. The Camaro will be graced with Seibon carbon fiber panels, and the Cadillac-sourced motor will see an slight increase in boost pressure, bringing it up to about 610 bhp . .. at the wheels. Expect to see this American icon smashing Mazdas and Scions during the 2010 Formula D Championship.
