Citroen Metropolis Concept To Spin Off Into Whole Line For China

Peugeot Citroen in partnership with Changan Automobile Group of China plans to launch a new line of luxury cars positioned at German premiums in the Chinese market. While a French company, with no cars in the U.S. starting a line of automobiles in China isn't the type of thing that usually raises our eyebrows, this announcement is interesting because Citroen reps confirmed that the line will be based on the Metropolis concept and will remain quite true to the design of that concept.

The Metropolis concept was an internationally designed beauty that was put together by Citroen's Shanghai-based international design team. It was developed for the Shanghai World Fair last year. It's quite a sexy auto with electric, lightning-bolt-esque lines running to and fro providing a subtle visual contrast with the strong, flowing curves of the car. Citroen doesn't plan on altering the look too drastically at the moment.

Gregoire Olivier CEO of Asian operations told Auto News: "The Metropolis will happen -- it will become a real car. The same styling elements will be used for a high-level Citroen car to be developed in China. We want to build up the premier line in China -- the Metropolis is emblematic of our approach."

As Olivier's words indicate, the Metropolis will be more than just a single vehicle, it will be a line of luxury vehicles. It will reportedly bear the range-topping designation "DS-9". Details like powertrain and launch dates are still being worked out and have not been specified.
The Metropolis concept was a plug-in hybrid that paired a 272-hp 2.0-liter V6 engine to a 94-hp electric motor. That combo channeled power through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The concept was designed for all-electric low-speed driving, more conventional gas-powered commuting and high performance gas-electric driving for up to 460 horses worth of grunt. The car also featured four-wheel drive. Outside, it featured a "Pearl Silk" body paint that changed color in different light conditions.
Citroen described the car in the press release that accompanied its debut: "Metropolis' distinctive silhouette is a vision of creative and sophisticated luxury with an imposing stature (5.3m long, 2m wide & 1.4m high), reflecting the dynamism and ambition of China in the 21st Century. Powerful and engaging, Metropolis' subtle ‘Pearl Silk' body colour changes under different light conditions, revealing the model's generous curves and ultra-honed detailing. Metropolis blends taut lines with smooth surfaces, evidenced particularly at the front where the sculpted, incisive wings and kite-shaped grille merge with the harmonious contours of the bonnet."
We're always happy to see an attractive concept making it to production, and this one is no exception.
