Honda Recalls the Odyssey

Similar to Toyota Motor Company’s recent recall, Honda recalled 528,000 vehicles for problems with the brake-seal that could potentially lead to brake fluid leaks. Honda reports that there is a risk of failure of master brake cylinder seals that could cause brake fluid leaks.  The problem occurs in vehicles in the U.S., most of them are the Honda Odyssey.

The recall, similar to the one Toyota recently announce for approximately one and a half million vehicles in the U.S. and Japan, occurred due to parts that were purchased from the same provider that Toyota used. ADVIC Co., a privately held Japanese auto parts maker, produced the seal that have the potential for leakage in both Honda and Toyota vehicles that have potential brake system problems.

The majority of the Honda recalls, (435,000) are 2005 through 2007 Honda Odyssey minivans, the remaining recalls affect the 2004-2007 Acura RL sedans.

The problem is that the seals have a potential to fail which could cause brake fluid to leak in incidents where factory issued brake fluid is not used.

Toyota said in an interview on Thursday that ADVI Co., the supplier of the seals, started to change the way the seals are designed as a result of defective parts. The new seals will allow for brake fluid, other than factory made, to allow for proper function of the seals without causing leaks.

In the next couple of months Honda will begin to call vehicles into dealerships for repairs, however, if the dashboard brake light is illuminated, consumers should seek mechanical repairs immediately from their dealerships, according to a Honda spokeswoman.

Toyota announced last week an additional recall of another 134,000 vehicles with potential brake system problems in China.

There is no information regarding an estimate of how much repairs will cost Honda, and so far there are no injuries or accidents that have been reported in connection with faulty brake seals.
