Bugatti Unveils Fastest Convertible in the World

Earlier this month, Bugatti announced a claimed world speed record for convertibles in its Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. The 1,183-hp open-topped Veyron screamed down Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessein track and was clocked in at 254.04 mph by the German inspection and certification aficianados at TUV. Bugatti followed the feat up by revealing a Grand Sport Vitesse "World Record Car" special edition at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Anthony Liu, the Chinese driver that sat behind the wheel and piloted the Vitesse to 254 mph was on hand at the show to reveal the new special edition. China, the world's largest car market and an area of increasing importance to premium automakers, proved the perfect backdrop for unveiling the elite supercar.

"China is one of the most important markets in Bugatti’s strategy for the future and we are aiming for a growth here that will be stable and sustainable”, explained Bugatti President Dr Wolfgang Schreiber. “We have found that the Chinese are enthused and amazed by the technological innovations and unique power that our cars have to offer, and by Bugatti’s ability to keep setting new standards. This is why we decided to invite a Chinese Bugatti enthusiast to set the record-breaking time in the Vitesse and it is also why we decided to bring the vehicle to Shanghai."

The original Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse was introduced last year. It added about 200 hp of output over the regular Grand Sport, upping the ante to the same 1,183 ponies offered in the fixed-top Veyron Super Sport, also a world record holder. Those ponies were foaled by Bugatti's bulging 8.0-liter W16 engine and its quad turbocharging system.

The World Record Car Edition keeps the same mechanicals but gets a distinct Arancia orange and black carbon fiber exterior to match the Veyron Super Sport, which owns a world production car speed record of 267.8 mph. That color scheme continues through the doors, where the black leather seats, steering wheel, doors and controls are complemented by orange stitching and accents. Visible black carbon elements are also included on the steering wheel, center console extension, iPad console and other areas.

Bugatti takes care to specify that none of the Vitesse's technology was modified for the world record run. Its 267.8 mph world speed record was recently thrown into question by Hennessey because of a speed limiter equipped all customer Veyron Super Sports but taken off the world record run car. Guinness reviewed the issue and eventually reconfirmed Bugatti's record. The hypercar-maker clearly doesn't want to have the same questions surface around its convertible record.

Bugatti will build just eight World Record Car special editions and sell each one for about $2.6 million.
